Origin
A question that stayed on the blackboard.
A letter about how it all began: an intuition, a book on the floor and many full blackboards. Ecuaciones Legales is the place where that question is still alive.
It all began, as these things usually do, by chance.
I had come far enough in my professional challenges to think them behind me, and still I felt something was missing. I did not know what. I was looking for another way to see how things are done, and why. My intuition told me something did not fit.
One ordinary day, in a municipal library, one of the books I was leafing through fell to the floor. Picking it up, I saw the title: Hans Kelsen’s Pure Theory of Law. A forgotten book, and compulsory reading in any law degree. At the time I was reading Einstein, Hawking, Kaku. We study the giants; what we tend to forget is to walk among them so that we can grow.
Einstein began his journey fascinated by the needle of a compass. Mine began with that book, at a moment when I was trying to make sense of space and time. And with an idea from those readings that stayed with me: science is rebuilding the boat while still sailing it.
A few improvised meetings at home and some visits to the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences at Universidad Complutense were enough. Seminar 204. Week after week, the blackboard filled with norms, articles, obligations, impacts, measures and risks, until what a mathematician recognises at once appeared: a model.
I am a humanities person who likes to understand reality through numbers. First order and classify. Then analyse relations and consequences. Finally, anticipate. I came to realise that companies and compliance work that way too, sometimes without knowing it.
Since then, a path full of signs, work, effort and the enthusiasm to build something we believe in. Ecuaciones Legales is the place where that question is forged every day. A fascinating journey that has only just begun.
